Houston

I’m in Houston right now…I did some MC work for this conference called ZERO.  It is a church planting conference…with some great men & women who feel called by God to plant churches in the United States.

I’m getting to spend time with some amazing leaders and I’m really challenged by Alan Hirsch.  Everything he just talked about is what I have been journaling for the last year.  I’m encouraged by what he is saying and feel that God is confirming in me what has been running through my head.

When are you coming to visit NYC?

What has been going through your head? I got a glimpse to the “filtered” version in Houston. I always like to see the raw version.

Bishop…I’m not sure when I will be in the NYC area, but when I do…you and me are going to connect.

Candace & Leo – what is running through my head? Well, the very idea of how we do this organization of people. Every time someone at the conference would ask a question, almost every one of them would ask it in reference to church equaling an organizational structure with a building. Alan really put it in perspective when he said that the missiology wasn’t the problem, the christology (way we view Jesus) was. This is what has been in my head – do most American Christians see Jesus as a NRA, anti-abortion, Republican, who loves buildings, purpose driven programs, and wants to see you in your Sunday best? This isn’t the Jesus I know from the gospels…does that mean I’m against any of those things I listed…no. I’m pretty sure Alan was right when he said that if Jesus came today, most of the people in churches across America would kill him.

I’ve been studying Jesus for awhile now and working on a book project to go along with my study of who Jesus is and how that doesn’t add up with the way he is viewed in American churches. God confirmed I was on the right path while listening to Alan and now reading his new book.

Plus..Leo, didn’t you think the bearded lady jesus was funny?

Yanno, a while back when I was at Mountain View I was confused about something and asked a deacon about it, and he said that I should read the Bible and be like Jesus. I read the Bible and all that, and well, I will have to tell you about that adventure sometime.

Church Planting should be about making disciples, if it is about anything other than that we are just moving Christians around.
